Gettin Started

Im finally back on the road bike!Today I found myself climbing the hills in Vacaville With Chris Stastny of the California berry Giants u-23 team.It was only 2.5 hours but it felt good to be back out on the road despite the cold weather and my two flats.
My plans have changed a little bit for this year since this will be my final season as a junior.I hope to place highly in specific races and most of all work as a team.
LET THE 2010 SEASON BEGIN !!

On The Road Again

Well today was my first day back on the road bike and man was it hard.I had no problems keeping up on the hills but suffered like no other on the flat sections.I really suffered trying to hang with the big boys and I think Ill be paying for today's hard efforts,Tomorrow!I'm hoping things will improve quickly now that I have more free time and since I was told that shammy time does not qualify for training time if your sitting on the couch watching races in your bib shorts.
Great winter training plan !!

Going No Where Fast!

I had no idea how I was gonna feel on my first long ride back.I started off telling my self lets go 10 miles then it went to 20 then next thing I know I'm in winters having already rode 20 miles. So by the time I cut through and got home I had rode 46miles and man did it take forever...
I felt like I was going so slow at 200watts.The best part is now I get to train with my friends now that I have a more compliant work schedule. Here is the latest photo from my last cross race, heading to a strong second place In the Mens B on a very technical course.

TT

I had a good time last night with a 23:06 but I still feel like there is room for improvement. With nationals approaching quickly I'm gonna try to squeeze in some TT time before heading off to Bend. The nationals course has a hill on the way out and down hill on the way back.I don't get to practice many TTs like that but with the experience gained at Red River I think Ill do okay.

Best of luck to all those who are fighting it out at cascade ....

one week to go

Nationals are coming up in the next few weeks so im trying to take it easy. With a idea of how the races will go im confident that if I race for myself in the road race all will be well.I have big hope for nationals this year and hope that my climbing is good enough to hang with the top guys.Ive decided to skip cascade to recover from my trip to Kentucky. With a lot of people riding cascade I hope that it will make me that much fresher for the 3 days of racing to come at the end of this month.I don't really know the weather in Bend,Oregon but if its like Kentucky then im not to worried.Zach also has high aspirations for nationals this year and I hope to help him in the crit. Now to finish watching the tour and just relax before I leave next week.

Wednesday Worlds

The first time ever on my TT Rig was painful. Not to mention that Zach,Chris and I walked all around downtown for hours,we all had a pretty ruff day.I put out a 24:19 only 18 seconds behind Zach and Staz delivered the best time out of the 3 of us with a 23 something .Time Trailing is painful but actually seems kinda fun.If only I could be as fast as the Freund kids.I think i may actually ride my TT bike more often now. They just look fast.

Some Footage

This was at the beginning of the 09 season
Hope you enjoy !!

Rain Drops Kept Falling On My Head

So today was the usual Aggie ride and even though it was clear when we started I knew it was bound to pour any second. With rain jacket on and about 30 people behind me we ventured off campus. The ride got fast early and i had no problems on the first sprint. The second sprint was what i was waiting for.Approaching the hill by the lake i moved up on the left and just went.I looked back and at first i saw nobody, then Judd moved out from behind my wheel and pulled through.I thought for sure i was gonna blow up and get dropped by the move I started as the group of riders past me where it beings to flatten out .As the group of 7 came towards the bridge I sat up and coasted in for 4th not even trying to out sprint those who sat on .On the final sprint back in towards campus going over the tracks I got a flat in the pouring rain and stood there with no one in sight as the lead group rolled away.I could only think about how Zach felt the last three time he got flats ,except I was soaking wet an, cold and all by myself.I hope the rain stops for this weekend, but if it did then it wouldn't be real bike racing would it ?

Throw down

Today was fun as I ventured to Napa to race in the Elite 3s.I showed up ready to go for the (elusive) DUB with teammates Carl and Keith who both could out sprint me even if it was a good day.The race was fast andstrung out with people dropping pretty fast.I stayed near the front to avoid gaps and crashes .But there were crashes every lap at the front and all over the group.Every lap was a fight for survival to dodge some human bowling pins try to squeeze themselfs into a gap that obviously doesn't exist.I got to admit i did get a little bit timid after seeing all those crashes. One lap 3 guys slid out near the front ,I had no where to go except up The curb, then bunny hop off the curb and chase back on to avoid going down or getting caught up in the mess.

Keith finished 3rd and Carl crashed with four to go. I settled for a pack finish do to the fact that my small boy parts couldn't Handel the Manley testosterone being thrown down in the race.Maybe the term Sack UP Is in order!

Pain City

So in Davis we have the local Tuesday ,Thursday race rides .Lots of people show up ready to race for three sprints spaced over 50 some odd miles.Being a junior i have a 52/14 and most people on the ride have 53/12's or 11's.Zach and I along with snoves and former junior (now superstar) Staz showed up ready to go .Phil mooney who rides for Metro mint cycling team (weak tro mint)shows up quiet often .Phil s only goal is to put Zach and I in the cave by making us spin are 14's at 300 rpm's(not really but at 35 + mphs it sure feels fast).Phil is a animal by any ones standards .The ride ended with Zach and I tearing the group apart (with the help of Staz and Snoves)trying to chase down the Break.Phil put so much hurt into my legs i will be living in Pain City for several days.

TIPS TO RIDING WITH PHIL :
1)Draft him and don't pull through (he will continue to accelerate and drop you)
2)let others chase him down(No one can)
3)Pray its a off or rest day (that means under 35 but above 32 mph)
4)attack him (he will counter and take you to the suffer cave)
5) when it gets fast pretend to get a flat.
6)Phil shows no pain so don't waste efforts trying to weaken him.
7)sack up and ride your bike !!!

Good luck !!!

12 mph

The junior race at Land Park was not what i expected.A early break went and Zach made the bridge no problem. No one chased(weird ,we are juniors ,full of energy).I blocked (at 12 mph sitting on the front in the hoods getting yelled at by other juniors to speed up and chase it down ) the majority of the race and as the gap opened i hoped that Z made it all worth while.
Z got screwed over by the motor ref. in the end but what ever ,Zach will win so many big races later in the year( districts or nationals ).
The next day was Bariani road race and as normal it was super windy. I rode well ,felling good until a small gap opened in front of me on the 3rd lap and i just couldn't pedal 30mph in a head wind by myself.what ever ,who cares about non hilly road races anyways haha .Just another weekend of good bike racing !!

Not much .

I haven't posted anything lately do to the fact that there was nothing interesting to tell you guys about.so let me give you guys a update.

1)I got a new bike.Look 595 with Sram red weighing in at just about 16 pounds

2)I raced at Merco criterium where i was announced as one of the heavy hitters in the junior race,I missed the break and rode the front for 20 some odd laps trying to chase it down with no help from anyone.I did split the chase group into pieces but the ones who remained had riders in the break.

3)I also raced the 3s in the crit and road race .Both were extremely fun .I learned alot real quick about the 3s.

4)I also completed my first 1,2,3 race( 60 minutes on 1.2 mile course ) .It was so smooth.I cant wait to do another race like that.

so that's pretty much it besides hammering down on the race rides life is good.

Another one bites the dust !

Yeah most of you heard about me chance to meet the infamous ground at cherry pie.The race wasn't fast by all means. The race organizers added a new part to the course that i find stupid and crash prone from the start.Just before the climb to the finish they added a right-left chicane with a center divide. I sat comfortably in the group feeling my cold every pedal stroke we made. The group was huge and a lot of inexperienced riders were still in the large 10 - 18 junior group. With three to go we entered the chicane and a rider 4 guys to my left freaked out and took me and three specialized riders down . I got up and my knees were hurting .Steve yelled to go get my free lap but with the lap card out my day was over. The specialized guys and I were pretty mad non the less but thats racing for ya!I iced the knees and they seem to be doing good but the cold still lingers .With the TOC junior crit ahead i hope i can get better soon.congrats to all who finished the race next year its revenge on the pie.

On Fire Out With A Cold !

After the recent success of the team and I , I have received a lot of compliments like, "Your on fire" or"Your gonna be hard to beat this year".But yesterday I woke up felling sick.I had a stuffy nose and coughing just a little bit.I hope this will pass quick and not disrupt my training .

The fire may be put out ! we shall see.

Cal Aggie (DBC Domination)

Man it was cold at 8 in the morn. The junior team came out for the Cal Aggie crit with a very talented Field ready to race.At the line jokes were exchanged between my good friend Daniel f. and I. Once the bell rang it was strictly down to racing. In the past if i had to describe my riding style in two words it would have been Aggressive and off the back! This year i have changed my ways to being strong and Conservative(Patience is a better word) .I sat on Zach's wheel for the first few laps just covering early moves.I snagged a early prime to test the legs. The race would go hard then come back together so it didn't splinter out as much as i had predicted.Aj,Robby and Torey all did a fair share of work on or off the front. With about five to go i told Daniel that a break was bound to go .With 3 laps to go after Zach had scored a prime Daniels teammate rolled off the front and i jumped to his wheel .I passed him going into the s bends and opened a large gap.I put my head down and hit the gas.As i passed the line for the bell i felt as if i was gonna puke so i kept my bottle instead of tossing it to the side.I rolled down the back side and went through the s bends and saw a group of 3 closing so i jumped it hard!Going into the final sharp turn Zach yells " go Cody get on my wheel!"We have 500 to go and I'm hanging on to Zach's wheel and came around his savage lead out with 150m to go and with hands raised DBC goes 1,2,3 at the line sweeping the junior podium! We all talked about the race later and split the prizes but Aj ,Zach and I still had one more race! What i hope to be my final 4s race was sketchy ,i took care of Aj the whole race waiting for the time to set him up for the sprint. With 3 to go i moved AJ to the front and I fell back as my legs were saying "ouch !"to the 34mph tempo!Aj drifted back but finished in the back of the pack.with the day almost over i sat and watched Staz win his first Pro race then headed hometired and very happy with the teams result!

Early Bird Road Race 09

So i woke up at 4:30 and headed out the door. When we arrived it was wet and foggy.I began to get ready for my warm up and the sun was coming out.I warmed up with the Freund family and talked over the plan.My goal for the day was to get in the lead break that everybody told me about. As we rode to the start line i stripped layers and moments latter we were off.The pace wasn't real fast but there were a lot of attacks right off the back.2 riders went away early on and people got antsy.I sat near the middle of the pack with Alex F. as they eventually brought them back .As we hit the steep part of the climb the group shattered and 3 guys slipped away.I rode with the second group on the road .I rode second wheel most of the climb letting others do the work,Alex had already gotten dropped on the climb. As we made the turn around i knew it would be a wicked fast and sketch descent.I was spun out the whole time and was aero one every straight away of the descent. We were gaining ground on the lead group of 3 but no one would really dedicate to the chase. After some words (by me)people started committing to the chase .when we caught them we still had a long ways to go.(48 miles out and back)I rotated with the other guys going 2 wide through gravel and mud covered corners. We got toward the finish and i sat out the last 2 rotations to save some energy. We saw the 2 k sign and a Godspeed rider who had sat in the whole time was dangling just off the front. With 1 k to go A rider from Touchstone jumped and a mouse rider followed,I was boxed on the right behind a webcore guy. With 400m to go i nudged my way threw and sprinted my way past the mouse rider but the touchstone rider was to fast or just in a better position.I ended up in second place which puts me that much closer to my 3's upgrade.

Winter Training

lately Ive been riding with Zach and Chris and we thought we would have good weather on our next ride. But no ! our sweet little spring weather is gone and the rain was evident during are ride with Janice on Thursday.I'm just trying to be ready for the early season races and so far its looking good.Z and Chris are good training partners and without them i would be the Taps i was at the start of last season. We had fun getting muddy and racing for the koms and sprints for the first time in awhile .Well I'm racing tomorrow and i think it will rain i hope it doesn't but if it does so what .I have been told that the course suites me and i should make the lead group. We will see what happens and i may race the crit on Sunday.Good luck to all who will be out there both days!!!

cross racing

Last weekend i went to Sutters landing to give Cyclocross a try.I rode three of 5 laps with the lead group and on the final lap of the C 's race me chain blew. The wicked course got me hooked and I'm planning to do one more race before it ends. The best part was that i ran my bike the whole last lap getting passed by every single rider .Cold and sandy i loved it !

San Bruno

So i woke up early and hit the rode with my dad.The trip there seemed shorter than last year but i also felt a lot stronger.I arrived to the race before reg. opened and found Mike Hernandez standing behind me.After done with reg. i saw Andreas and Alex pull up. We got on our bike with about 1.5hours till mass start. We rode for what felt like forever up a little loop 3 blocks from the start line. One side a uphill the other and down hill.We stopped riding with about 25 minutes till start to lose clothes and take a leak.I rolled to the line chatting away with good friends DanielF. and Tisdell. We got confronted by the ladies in front of us because we flew around them last year.I was wearing nothing but a base layer and arm warmers like andreas, everybody else was covered in clothing. The race started off fast and i followed the wheels going to the front.Staz sat 3rd for the majority of the climb. The mass start had most of the juniors in the group with the pro 1-2s .I got dropped from the mass ( all combined fields) lead group with 1 mile to go and could only see Andreas in front of me.I looked back to see Farinha on Tisdells wheel. We rode together with Andreas just ahead.Farinha was struggling and drifting back, but Tisdell put in a attack and dropped Farinha but i came up beside him and rode my tempo hopeing Farinha wouldn't come back.I looked back and i had dropped Tisdell as well and 2 other guys from the 3's.I rode every corner as if it was the last.Through the fog i finally found the final bend and set up after passing the line.I saw Andreas just coming to a stop and asked him how long he had been at the top.Andreas rode to victory with a 16:47 and i came in close 3rd with a 17:09 just ahead of Tisdell and Farinha .Staz rocketed up the hill with the pros and out kicked Rob Anderson For 5Th .Aj did well with a 20:33 finishing just a little behind his dad .The race was cold , fun and a good way to start the new year !
